Bobcats Perform on the Big Stage in Historic ESPN Exhibition at Youngstown State
The Bryant & Stratton College (Ohio) men's basketball team took a major step onto the national stage Friday morning, competing in a historic exhibition matchup against Youngstown State University at the Beeghly Center. The contest marked the Bobcats' first-ever appearance on ESPN and their first exhibition game against an NCAA Division I opponent, as Youngstown State earned a 99–61 victory.
Youngstown State jumped out early behind a strong shooting performance, taking a 51–25 lead into halftime. The Penguins finished the game shooting over 52% from the field and nearly 47% from three-point range, while also controlling the glass.
Despite the final score, Bryant & Stratton showed flashes of athleticism, toughness, and growth against high-level Division I competition. One of the game's signature moments came when Phillip Byrd ignited the Bobcats' bench with a powerful fast-break dunk, showcasing his explosiveness in transition on the national broadcast. On the defensive end, Sam Whitaker III delivered a highlight of his own with a textbook help-side block, rotating over to protect the rim and deny an easy basket.
Offensively, the Bobcats were led by Greg Thurman, who finished with 12 points, while Tareeq Roper added 11 points and six rebounds off the bench. Byrd also made an impact on the glass, pulling down eight rebounds, and Whitaker III contributed across the board with 4 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 blocks.
The exhibition provided invaluable experience for Bryant & Stratton, allowing the program to measure itself against Division I size, speed, and physicality in front of a national audience. The opportunity represents a significant milestone as the Bobcats continue to build their program and compete fearlessly on bigger stages.
